Insanity is defined as continually doing the same thing and expecting different results.

Anytime I get stuck or frustrated with my progression to my goals I take a step back and reevaluate the situation. I ask myself, “Is this REALLY the best way to go about this?” If the answer is no then I revisit the goal I am trying to accomplish. Let me give you an example:

My goal was to bench press 250 lbs by summer 2008. At the time I could barely lift 175 lbs in 2007. I used to do 50 pushups a day to try to reach that goal. But, 2008 came and I was frustrated because I did not feel like I was getting stronger. Not to mention I was still not even able to break the 200 lb mark. So, I asked myself, “Is this REALLY the best way to go about this?” And the answer was, “no”. Next, I did some more research on how to increase my upper body strength. I spoke with some friends who regularly lifted weights, went to the bookstore and read some fitness books, and even spoke with some GNC employees about supplement options. After all of that, I then was able to create a new routine to follow. I stuck to the plan religiously. I was a gym rat. Low and behold, by the middle of the summer in 2008 I was able to achieve my goal.

This example was not to try to impress you with my minimal pectoral strength…I wanted you to see that when you are on a course to achieving a goal and you feel stuck or seriously frustrated with the lack of progress, the best thing to do is to stop, and reevaluate the situation. Once you feel like you have a better plan to achieving the goal, make it happen.

Remember, if you feel like you are in a hole, STOP digging.

The infamous question that everybody is asked as a child and it continues to haunt you your entire life. What do you want? or What do you want to be? I decided to look up the word ‘want’ to see what the definition was.

want [wont, wawnt] –verb (used with object)
1. to feel a need or a desire for; wish for: to want one’s dinner; always wanting something new.
2. to wish, need, crave, demand, or desire (often fol. by an infinitive): I want to see you. She wants to be notified.
3. to be without or be deficient in: to want judgment; to want knowledge.
4. to fall short by (a specified amount): The sum collected wants but a few dollars of the desired amount.
5. to be lacking or absent, as a part or thing necessary to completeness: All that wants is his signature.

I then realized that “to want” something is automatically telling you that you have fallen short of your goal. It’s already accepting defeat. When you say “I want to be rich.” It says, I am here and what I want is not in my possession. Also, to want something is just a thought, so you never have to do any physical action.

Now lets change the word ‘want’ to ‘become’. Instead of saying “what do you want to be?” or “I want to be rich.” Lets say, “what do you become?”or “I am becoming rich.”

be⋅come [bi-kuhm] be⋅came, be⋅come, be⋅com⋅ing. –verb (used without object)
1. to come, change, or grow to be (as specified): He became tired.
2. to come into being.
–verb (used with object)
3. to be attractive on; befit in appearance; look well on: That gown becomes you.
4. to be suitable or necessary to the dignity, situation, or responsibility of: conduct that becomes an officer.

To become is totally different. When you are becoming, you are already in the process towards your goal. You are in a changing state. This no longer leaves you standing still. It says you have thought about your goal and now you are physically doing whatever actions necessary.

There is a huge difference here. So next time you or someone else ask you “what you want?” Instead of responding with “I want…” respond with “I am becoming…”

Ok, you are finally ready to start putting in the efforts needed to get your goals accomplished. You figured out your 2nd Shift hours and now it’s time to get to work. After a couple of sessions you look back and realized you haven’t gotten a lot done. Why is this? Because you may be clocking hours instead of grinding.

One trap that we often fall in is just clocking hours. It comes from our 9-5 jobs. We get to work, clock in, then we start talking to co-workers, surfing the web, listening to music and so forth. Even though we are getting paid for the time, we aren’t being that productive. However, when you start working on your own, the only hours that count are the ones when you grind and not clock. When you grind, you start seeing progress. You are focused at the task at hand and being efficient. So next time you sit down for 2ndShift, don’t just sit there and clock hours, but make those hours mean something by grinding.
